Mumbai: Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray has asked President Pratibha Patil to 'hang' the Karnataka Government for its anti-Marathi stand.
Thackeray’s outburst in party mouthpiece Saamna came after the BJP-ruled Karnataka Government on Tuesday superseded the elected council of Belgaum civic body for the second time in seven months, citing several reasons.
The Karnataka High Court had recently quashed the government’s order dismissing the Belgaum civic body, which has a majority of Marathi-speaking population.
“Pratibha Patil is our President. She could not hang Afzal Guru in the last five years. Now, when you are demitting office, at least ‘hang’ the Karnataka Government, which is anti-Maharashtra,” Thackeray said.
In the last Presidential election, Shiv Sena had supported Patil’s candidature by going against the collective decision of the National Democratic Alliance to back Bhairon Singh Shekawat.
Addressing the President, Thackeray wrote: “After all, you are going to settle in Maharashtra at the end of your tenure. A historic opportunity has been presented to you to repay the debt of Maharashtra.”
In his trademark caustic style, he accused the “impotent” Maharashtra Government of not doing anything to help the Marathi-speaking people in Karnataka.
