Bengaluru: A complaint has been filed with the State Human Rights Commission in Karnataka against Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy for asked a police official to "shoot mercilessly" those who had killed a JD(S) worker.
The complaint filed by activist T Narasimha Murthy on behalf of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Karnataka said the statement amounts to disrespect of the judiciary and was a “scary development”.
“Such act is illegal, will dilute the spirit of the constitution…. CM directing the police to shootout (sic) will mislead and misguide the police. It amounts to misuse of law,” Murthy’s complaint said.
The CM, meanwhile, maintained that his statement was an emotional reaction and said it was a closed chapter. He also refused to apologise.
"This is not a big issue. It’s human tendency. In that kind of situation, any human being will react like that. I am an emotional person. I will get involved if there any citizen of the state is in trouble. That's why instead of using the word ‘encounter’, I told them (police) that you please smoke them. That's my final word. This issue is over according to me," Kumaraswamy said.
In a video of his telephone conversation that went viral, Kumaraswamy was heard saying: "I don't know how you will handle it (the case)… because it was your responsibility. I am actually disappointed because it (the murder) brought a bad name. He (Prakash) was a good person… There is no problem if you shoot such people mercilessly," he said alluding to the alleged killers.
"I am least bothered (about the consequences)," the chief minister had said.
