New Delhi: "You shouldn't be giving so much importance to these doctors. They should call off their strike now." That was Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's acerbic response when asked about the ongoing strike by medical professionals in Uttar Pradesh.
When queried about patient deaths due to the strike, Mulayam had another bitter volley to serve us. "Who died? Did anyone in your family die? Did anyone from your village die?" he asked.
The Uttar Pradesh government has come under fire for the shoddy way it handled the doctors strike in the state which entered its sixth day on Thursday.
The strike began ever since some junior doctors were thrashed and beaten up by the Kanpur police after an altercation with SP MLA Irfan Solanki last week. Twenty-four of those doctors who were arrested were released today. However, they have threatened to go on a strike again unless the charges against them are expunged.
The Allahabad High Court has, meanwhile, ordered a judicial probe into the incident and sought a report from the UP government on action taken against the Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police and Solanki. The Akhilesh government has set up a probe panel which will submit a report in three weeks.
