New Delhi: The Hindu-Muslim divide is clearly visible in voting preference across India, reveals CNN-IBN, CSDS, Lokniti post-poll survey. According to the findings 39 per cent Hindus have voted for the BJP and 43 per cent Muslims have voted for the Congress.

Two other major religious minorities, the Christians and the Sikhs have also preferred the Congress over the BJP. According to survey 35 per cent Christians and 25 per cent Sikhs have voted for the Congress.

Just 19 per cent Hindu respondents claim that they have voted for the Congress while 9 per cent Muslims, 8 per cent Christians and 16 per cent Sikhs claim that they voted for the BJP, claims the survey.

One more important aspect is the gap between BJP and Congress is highest among first time voters and support for the BJP high across age groups but declines with age. 39 per cent of the respondents in the age group of 18-22 claim that they have voted for the BJP.

The Congress has got more support among the voters whose age is 45 years and plus.

Region-wise support

The BJP has got the highest 47 per cent support in the western and central regions of the country which includes Modi's home state of Gujarat. It is just 16 per cent for the BJP in South India and 29 per cent in East and Northeastern India. In North India, BJP has got 39 per cent support.

Interestingly, the Congress has also got the highest support of 29 per cent in Western and Central India. But, it is losing heavily in these regions because of a direct fight with the BJP.

The Congress has got 23 per cent in South, 20 per cent in North and 18 per cent in East and Northeastern India respectively.

The survey findings show that BJP is still a party of Hindi speaking areas as 47 per cent respondents in Hindi speaking areas back it while in the rest of India, its is just 24 per cent.

The Congress has got 18 per cent support in Hindi speaking areas and 28 per cent in rest of India. The BJP is slightly ahead in urban areas than rural areas. It has got 33 per cent support in rural areas and 36 per cent support in urban areas.

However, the Congress is equal in both with 22 per cent support.

AAP factor

The AAP has failed to enthuse the voters, claims survey. According to findings of the survey, the AAP has got just 3 per cent support across India and it is 7 per cent in North India.

The AAP has got a mere 1 per cent support in South India. Even in the North, the AAP is actually doing well only in Delhi and Punjab.
