New Delhi: R S Gill was on Saturday appointed as the Director General of Police of Punjab in place of S S Virk, who was booted out by the EC.
Gill was the Director of Punjab Police Academy (PPA) at Phillaur.
Earlier in the day, the Election Commission has asked the Punjab government to transfer the state's Director General of Police S S Virk with immediate effect “in the interest of the state”.
The Commission has said that in recent period, concerns have been raised regarding his credibility and perceived neutrality in the forthcoming Assembly polls .
After the EC order the Punjab government had recommended names of three senior IPS officers - R S Gill, Mohd Izhar Alam and K K Attri.
The names were sent directly to the EC as per the poll authority's instructions.
