Telangana: Cabinet may clear draft Bill today, strike likely in Seemandhra
Day 1 of Parliament's winter session saw repeated disruptions by protesting MPs from Andhra Pradesh.

New Delhi: Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana continues to be a thorn in the Congress's side. On Day 1 of Parliament's last session before the Lok Sabha elections, MPs from Andhra Pradesh continuously disrupted the proceedings, resulting in repeated adjournments.

Clashes broke out outside the Andhra Bhawan between pro- and anti-Telangana groups as the government said it will push ahead with the Bill. Top leaders from Andhra Pradesh, including Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, held a silent protest at Jantar Mantar.

The CM then met the President, who also held a meeting with another top leader from Andhra Pradesh, Jagan Mohan Reddy, later in the day.

The CM told the President that more than 70 per cent of Andhra Pradesh is against the formation of Telangana.

Jagan, on the other hand, has threatened to move an adjournment motion in the House.

A GoM meet will be held on Thursday to discuss the present scenario. It had finalised the Bill and approved the Cabinet note on Tuesday. However, the Cabinet is unlikely to clear it today, say sources.

Government employees from the Seemandhra region have threatened to go on a strike if the Bill is tabled in Parliament.

CM Reddy has said he will decide on the next course of action after consulting his MPs and MLAs.
