Kolkata: The West Bengal cabinet on Wednesday discussed the renaming of the state with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee taking an initiative in this regard.
"Primary discussions were held for change in nomenclature of the state," state commerce and industries minister Partha Chatterjee told reporters after the cabinet meeting.
The minister pointed out that due to the state's name beginning with the alphabet W (ie West Bengal), its name slipped to the bottom at all-India conferences, seminars and meetings.
Stating that the issue was sensitive, Chatterjee said that the chief minister had asked Chief Secretary Samar Ghosh to suggest names by involving all parties concerned.
He said the chief minister was of the view that political parties having representation in the Assembly, should be taken into confidence and discussions held with experts in this field.
The previous Left Front government had taken a move about a decade ago to change the nomenclature of the state, but the plan for the same did not materialise.
