WB polls: Buddhadeb takes action against Basu
Buddhadeb said that Basu has been debarred from addressing public meetings and may face punitive action.

Kolkata: Cracking the whip on Anil Basu for using foul language against Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, WB Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday said that the senior CPM leader has been debarred from addressing public meetings and may face punitive action.

"He will not address public meetings from now on," the chief minister said at a 'Meet-the-Press' programme. Asked if any punitive action would be taken against Basu, the chief minister said, "We do not tolerate filthy language. Punishment will be given if necessary."

Describing Basu's use of such language as 'unfortunate,' Bhattacharjee said, "No one can tolerate it."

Bhattacharjee said that CPM state secretary Biman Bose has censured Basu and warned him not to use such language in future. "He has also been asked to issue a written statement and apologise."

Bhattacharjee, however, argued that it would be wrong, however, to assume that using bad language was the culture of the party just because one person had used such language.

"One person is out of his head. It has to be rectified. But at the same time, in which other party would you find such a large number of good people?" Bhattacharjee said adding, "If we make mistakes, we can rectify them."

Asked about allegations that he himself had set the example of using bad language against opposition parties, the chief minister said, "I do not think so." Bhattacharjee, however, criticised opposition Trinamool Congress without naming the party for the use of language by their leaders.

"Look at the language being used by the Opposition. They have accused my daughter of running an NGO with foreign funds. This is absolutely untrue," he said.
