New Delhi: Who would have thought a whiskey bottle could turn smart? Diageo and Thin Film Electronics unveiled a smart Jonnie Walker bottle that has sensors printed on it.
Introduced at the ongoing Mobile World Congress, the connected 'smart bottle,' a prototype of Johnnie Walker Blue Label, features the printed sensor tags that can detect both the sealed and opened state of each bottle.
Based on Thinfilm's OpenSense technology, the tags and sensor information contained on the printed label will allow Diageo to send targeted marketing messages or personalized communications to the consumers who read the tags with their smartphones.
The technology makes use of Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities and the OpenSense tags can dynamically detect if a bottle is sealed or open with just a tap of an NFC smartphone. The tags are completely and permanently coded at the time of manufacture and hence can't be duplicated.
The technology will also allow Diageo track bottle movements across the supply chain, in-store and to the point of consumption.
The sensor tags will remain readable even when the factory seal has been broken, which will provide an additional layer of security in protecting the authenticity of the product.
