The Fire Phone is no longer in stock on Amazon's US site and there are no clear signs that supplies will be replenished.
Amazon's first smartphone was a bold idea -- a handset focused on consumption with a trick 3D-effect display -- that was executed poorly and with too high a price tag to tear consumers away from iOS and Android devices. Even after the retailer started heavily discounting the device.
In August, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company was contemplating quitting the smartphone market altogether in order to reassess its position, and the fact that the handset has now been out of stock for some weeks suggests that the claims could be true.

Amazon has firmly entrenched itself in the tablet market however and earlier this week The Journal claimed that in order to boost sales in the run up to the holiday season, that Amazon was prepping a $50 tablet with a 6-inch screen.
