iPhone 17 Series Launch Could Start Apple’s 5G Modem Era, End Of Qualcomm?
Apple has been using Qualcomm's 5G modem for iPhones over the past few years but that could change with a Mac-like transition.

Apple is being tipped to start its in-house 5G modem era in 2025 with two iPhone models to come equipped with the hardware. The details about this change come via noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who claims Apple will be going ahead with its own 5G modem as early as next year. Kuo also mentions that the iPhone 17 Slim and the iPhone SE 4 models will be getting the new-gen 5G modem from the company.

Apple is getting ready to unleash its AI-powered iPhone 16 series this year but all eyes are already eager to see the 2025 iPhone 17 series lineup, now more so because of the purported 5G modem making its debut.

5G Modem Completes The Goal

Qualcomm and Apple have gone along for many years and the chipset giant has been providing its modems, including the 5G unit for iPhones in recent years. Apple’s wholehearted focus on in-house hardware was invariably going to pinch their modem business.

Even though reports claimed recently that Qualcomm will support iPhone modems until 2026 at least, Kuo’s update suggests Apple will have a dual-thronged strategy for modems from 2025 itself. By using the in-house 5G modem on these rumoured iPhone models, Apple is making sure that the golden goose of iPhone 17 and 17 Pro models are not affected by any possible issues that could plague the first-gen modems.

After all, the regular iPhone 17 models will fetch higher eyeballs and demand, and the company wouldn’t want possible modem glitches to affect its sales and opinion in the market. We have seen this movie play out when Apple was bringing the M-series silicon for Macs and still had the Intel-powered models available in the market.

But gradually, things made it clearer and simpler for the company as the Intel Macs were gradually phased out of the market, and Qualcomm could face the same music in the next few years.
