The suspects then drove the truck to Rangpur Pahadi where they transferred 950 phones, worth Rs 2.5 crore, into their own van.

New Delhi: Ahead of the Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus's India debut, a group of men hijacked a truck carrying a consignment of the Rs 60,000-priced flagship phones near Vasant Kunj in South Delhi by attacking the driver with chilli powder.

The accused then drove the truck to Rangpur Pahadi where they transferred 950 phones, worth Rs 2.5 crore, into their own van.

According to a news report in the Times of India, the efforts went in vain when police tracked them down and recovered the consignment.

The police said that the truck driver Kalam Singh approached the Vasant Kunj (south) police station on Tuesday night and detailed the robbery. He said that he had been driving with the phones from Okhla to Dwarka when someone threw a packet containing a red powder into his truck. He thought of it as a prank by children, but soon felt his eyes and skin burning.

When he stopped to wash his hands, two men armed with knives forced him inside the truck and held him captive till the time more members joined who drove the truck further.

After offloading the iPhones into their van, the men shoved the truck driver out at the Rajokri flyover and drove away.

The police registered a case of dacoity. A team led by ACP KP Kukrety and SHO Sanjay Sharma analysed CCTV footage of the area and were able to nab the accused.
