Samsung Announces 4 Years of Android Security Updates for Devices From 2019 and Later
Samsung smartphones used to get two years worth of upgrades up till now.

Samsung has announced that it will offer four years of security updates, beating Google at its own game, as Pixel smartphones themselves get only three years of updates, which were said to be the longest on any Android device. This comes as the first step towards any Android device matching iPhones‘ six years worth of updates. Android smartphones generally get security updates for two years, apart from the Google Pixel series, which offers three full years of Security updates, including monthly patches as well as three Android updates.

The original Google Pixel was updated from Android 7.1 Nougat to Android 10, after the updates were extended from the initial two years. Samsung has also had two years of monthly updates to its Galaxy smartphones up to this point. Samsung smartphones and tablets from 2019 onwards are now promised four years of Android Security updates. Samsung has also started pushing more Android OS updates than Google itself. Samsung also released a list of Android devices that will get four years of security updates in a release. These include Galaxy Foldable devices, Galaxy S series starting from Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note series (starting from Note 10 Series), Galaxy A series, Galaxy M series, Galaxy XCover series, and Samsung Galaxy Tab series that launched in 2019 or after.

For Google to regain its position as the king of Android updates, it could push a fourth upgrade to its Pixel smartphones and five years of security updates. However, if the Mountain View, California-based giant will go ahead with these changes is something that remains to be seen.
