Why Motorola Dropped Flipkart and Chose Amazon As Exclusive Partner for Moto G4, India Head Explains

New Delhi: Motorola may be selling its devices on Amazon India for some months now, but for the first time, the company chose the e-commerce player as an exclusive partner.

The company, which launched the G4 phones in India this week, announced that the new phones will be exclusively available on Amazon India.

Until the G4 launch, Motorola had always got Flipkart on board as an exclusive partner for the devices that it intended to sell on a single platform. But with the G4 launch, the company has dropped its long-standing partner Flipkart in favour of Amazon.

We asked Amit Boni, Motorola India head, to explain why the company was not continuing its partnership with Flipkart and why they chose Amazon for the G4?

Explaining the company's move, Boni said, "We look at our product portfolio and decide what route-to-market or go-to-market strategy should be deployed for, so that the product reaches successfully to the end consumers."

"Evaluation of strategy and evaluation of route-to-market dictate what partners do we go with. And Amazon is an amazing partner in India," he stressed.

"It's been really growing fast and they are in sync with our expectations and strategies of how we want to reach the consumers. And that's why it's the right partner for us to go for the Moto G4," explained Boni.

The company may be selling a couple of devices on other platforms, but it has no plans to sell the G4 through other channels - even in the future.

"Moto G4 is an Amazon-exclusive product. So, you will see it only on Amazon, and not even in the offline stores," he said.

While companies usually announce price cuts on the last-gen models as the successors come in, Motorola isn't going to do so for the G3. The reason according to the Motorola India head is that there are very little Moto G3 units left unsold.
