Archeologists keep discovering ancient relics and objects. It gives us a glimpse of humankind’s past; showing us how they lived and what they believed in. As per latest reports that are going viral, archeologists have unearthed 2000-year-old paintings from Pompeii, Italy. According to the reports by Daily Star, the archeologists discovered the paintings during a new excavation of the site. It was found buried under the volcanic ash of Mount Vesuvius eruption, which occurred in 79 AD. The scientists believe that these discoveries are some of the “finest” paintings found in the ruins. These frescoes show Greek mythology deities, which were painted on the high black walls of a banquet hall in a newly-discovered residence. As per more information, one of the paintings depicted Helen of Troy. Some of the other frescoes, a signature of the place, showed the Greek sun god Apollo, seducing the priestess Cassandra. The next artwork depicts her rejection of the Greek god, leading to her downfall.

The archeologists say that the dark colour of the wall was used to hide the lamp’s smoke deposits, as it was used for late night entertainment. One official said, “In the shimmering light, the paintings would have almost come to life.”

This current Pompeii excavation began around 12 months ago and is reported to be the biggest of a generation, while a third of the city is still left to be excavated. This excavation is going through a residential and a commercial block, termed as Region 9. Region 9 consists of a wholesale bakery, a laundry and a luxurious residence where the banquet hall is located.

Some more frescoes were found in the area, which included a ceiling fresco in a room, destroyed by the eruption. It showed Egyptian characters, flowers, food and even theatrical masks. A fresco was discovered last year, which depicted a food item resembling a pizza. Interestingly, this food item was not made in the place at that time.
