Maintaining good oral hygiene through routine dental check-ups is crucial for overall health. However, a tragic incident in China highlights the potential risks even in common dental procedures. A 23-year-old Chinese man named Wang lost his life after a seemingly routine double tooth extraction resulted in intracranial bleeding.

In the pursuit of alleviating tooth pain, Wang sought dental assistance at Kuiyong People’s Hospital in Shenzhen. Following a standard examination, the dentist recommended the extraction of two teeth, to which Wang consented. Tooth extraction is generally considered a low-risk procedure, making this case all the more alarming.

Immediately after the extraction, Wang was instructed to undergo dental X-rays. However, as he rose from the dental chair, he lost consciousness and collapsed. Swiftly transported to a hospital for emergency care, doctors diagnosed him with intracranial bleeding directly linked to the tooth extraction. Despite undergoing an emergency craniotomy, Wang remained in a deep coma, succumbing to multiple organ failure after 14 days.

This tragic incident has sent shockwaves across the nation. Wang’s family is currently engaged in a legal battle with the Shenzhen hospital, alleging medical negligence against the dentist and staff, holding them responsible for Wang’s untimely death. The hospital, however, staunchly defends its position, asserting that the dentist adhered to all protocols during the treatment. Furthermore, the hospital has refused to meet the compensation demand put forth by Wang’s family.

Reports indicate that Wang’s family is seeking compensation amounting to 1.8 million yuan (approximately Rs 2 crore). In contrast, the hospital is willing to offer only 600,000 yuan (approximately Rs 70 lakh). As the legal dispute unfolds, Wang’s body has not been cremated, as the family fears it could compromise crucial evidence. Consequently, the young man’s remains have been held at the funeral parlour for several months, prolonging the family’s anguish.
