Tooth infection is a common problem that is faced by many people. But recently, a tooth infection turned into a life-threatening flesh-eating disease for a man in England. According to the report, the name of the man is Terry. He is a resident of Suffolk and has shared that he could lose his vision as the area under his eye became filled with pus.

Terry shared his story on The Face Doctors, a Discovery Plus series. It focuses on cutting-edge treatments for rebuilding and repairing wounds caused by hereditary disorders or acute trauma. In Terry’s case, things went wrong after he got a tooth removed by a local dentist. It led to the development of an abscess, and Terry was rushed to local hospitals to prevent the situation from worsening. After visiting there he came to know that the swelling under his eye was most likely caused by something within his mouth.

Soon, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment, as it became a serious situation. Maxillofacial surgeon Shadi Basyuni decided to carry out surgery to remove the pus. He shared that he had never seen such a case before. Tooth infections can be really dangerous.

In this case, the infection spread into the eye socket of Terry, who was almost on the verge of losing his vision. It was a very urgent case. He further added that if it spread into Terry’s eye socket, he could lose an eye. If it spreads into his bloodstream, he could get more generally unwell, and in medical terms, it is called life-threatening sepsis. Initially, after seeing the test results for Terry, he was shocked.

The life-threatening infection was eating away at his face. During the surgery, they discovered the tissue around his face was full of microorganisms and bugs. The skin of Terry’s eyelid had also turned black.

The surgery was successful. After the emergency surgery, Terry had to spend eight weeks in recovery. If Terry had left it like that, the infection would have spread to many of his organs, and he could have died due to organ failure. His face was left without stitches so that the wound could be cleaned repeatedly to heal. When the doctors checked him eight weeks later, his face had drastically transformed. Now, he has recovered.
