Whether you’re travelling for work or a family vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is making packing mistakes. It is crucial to remember what items are allowed on the flight and can pass through airport security smoothly. While there is plenty of information online about prohibited items, travellers on Reddit recently shared some funny, weird and surprising stories about things that were confiscated by airport security. Some responses are humorous, while others are almost too bizarre to believe.
Taking to a subreddit, a user asked, “Confiscated objects at the airport. What is your most interesting, funny or weird story about objects that were confiscated from you at the airport?” The Redditor shared their own experience, claiming the strangest item they were forced to leave behind was a pot of honey. The thread was filled with numerous comments, as people shared their unique airport incidents.

Someone wrote, “Coming back from Iceland we had about $50 worth of their magnificent cheese spreads in our carry-on. The Reykjavik security security took them. We found more in the airport after security, so we bought a shitload. That shitload was confiscated in Dallas when we changed planes. My wife cried for an hour. It was a bad day.”
Another person shared, “They confiscated a candle from me. A CANDLE!”
If you think that was weird, this one will shock you. A passenger shared that he had a copy of Dante Alighieri’s Inferno which was confiscated. “November 2001 at the Charlotte Airport, I was reading suspicious material that was held for inspection. It was Dante’s Inferno I was reading for a class.”
“I had a grenade-shaped cologne called Spicebomb. They took it away when I was leaving Gatwick,” a comment read.
Another wrote, “Poop-paper. On the way to New Zealand, they asked me to open my carry on. On top of my bag, there’s a bundle of paper saying “POOP” on it. They said it’s an animal product and poses dangers to the NZ environment so they confiscated it to be destroyed. The lady was nice and didn’t fine me.”
An individual shared, “LA airport security insisted that we were importing food from outside the US. They kept us waiting for 2 hours and emptied our huge suitcase. Finally they got to a dry tangerine that must have travelled in a corner of that suitcase for the last 5 years and proudly confiscated it.”
One more added, “Saddest confiscated item was some awesome slime when I was a kid probably, 11-12 and it was my only souvenir that I chose for myself at the Smithsonian space museum in DC.”
