Man Storms Out Of Family Trip After Mother-in-law Uses His Toothpaste

A bizarre incident has left a family’s dream vacation in tatters after a man stormed out of their Venice holiday due to a toothpaste dispute with his mother-in-law. According to a Reddit confession, the 38-year-old man and his 35-year-old wife had been planning their romantic getaway for months, but things took a turn for the worse when his mother-in-law joined the trip. Initially, the man was irritated when his mother-in-law wanted to accompany them, but things escalated when she started using the couple’s toothpaste. This seemingly trivial incident was the final straw, leading the man to abandon the vacation.

The Reddit post, shared on the popular “AITA” (Am I The A——?) forum, revealed that the man had been looking forward to a romantic trip in Venice with his wife, but his mother-in-law’s presence and actions ruined the experience.

When his wife’s mother learnt of the trip, she was encouraged to accompany them as well since “it was her dream to visit too.” “My wife was very supportive of this idea, but I was more reluctant,” he explained in the Reddit post.

There were arguments because, much to the user’s “dismay,” his wife only reserved one room with two queen beds for the party of four. The way their room was set up, the Redditor claimed, his mother-in-law was “constantly in my space” since she was sitting on their bed and sharing his wife’s “expensive” items, such as face wash, shampoo and lotion.

The user expressed that, as a “very private person,” he finds it “very unhygienic” that his mother-in-law sits on the bed that he and his wife share.

According to the Reddit user, his mother-in-law also searched through their baggage for a hair tie, and he found it annoying that she did it without asking.

“I don’t like the thought of her looking through our stuff when we’re gone, so I locked it,” he said.

The user stated that discovering his mother-in-law happened to be using his and his wife’s toothpaste caused him to feel “ill,” which was the “final straw.”

“I don’t like the thought of her putting her toothbrush close to (or even on) the toothpaste nozzle…,” he said.

The user continued by saying that he had even questioned his mother-in-law whether she was just going to “freeload” by going along as she just paid for her own aircraft tickets and didn’t cover any additional costs, such as lodging, amenities or meals.

He stated that he had “politely” requested her many times to stop using his wife’s belongings, particularly since they use them together and it’s very “inappropriate.”

The user claims that when his wife heard what happened via his mother-in-law, she yelled at him. At the time, he said, he was “very angry” because the vacation he had paid for “with MY OWN MONEY” was now “ruined.”

He said that after changing the date on his aircraft ticket, he immediately returned home and that his wife had contacted him many times later, yelling at him and informing him that their daughter was upset.

In the end, he mentioned that his wife was capable of paying for her own travel expenses and accommodations in Italy as she had her own credit card. He continued by saying that he had been putting off answering his wife’s calls in order “to take some time for my own mental health.”

Following the post’s popularity on Reddit, the AITA community condemned the man’s behaviour, citing his lack of clear communication with his mother-in-law and wife, as well as his unrealistic expectations for cleanliness. The author responded to his critics, thanking them for their advice and admitting that he had “realised my mistakes.”

However, in a last update, he stated that his wife had been avoiding his calls and that his mother-in-law had begun divorce procedures.
