A young mother was left in a coma and nearly died after a botched stomach operation in Turkey. NHS worker Chloe Quick, 23, was faced with a medical bill running into thousands of pounds after suffering complications following the £1,500 (Rs 1.34 lakh) weight loss operation.

Chloe suffered a haemorrhage and collapsed just hours after the “nightmare” procedure on April 26. An endoscopy revealed her spleen had ruptured and she needed emergency life-saving surgery.

She was put into an induced coma and her family were told there was only a 50/50 chance of her pulling through. Thankfully Chloe, from Hereford, survived and is now recovering from the horrific ordeal in a private hospital in Istanbul.

Her family and friends are now raising funds in the hope of covering the £5,300 (Rs 5.5 lakh) cost of emergency treatment and transport home.

Chloe, who works as a nursing assistant at Hereford County Hospital, is currently forced to stay in hospital for an extended period as she risks a blood clot if she flies too early.

Her best friend Leah Mattson, 23, who also had gastric surgery at another Turkish clinic, set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs.

She said: “Chloe has always been worried about money and the only thing she was scared of before the operation was handing over this large sum of money because she never imagined she would almost not come home.

“I feel bad for her, she was so close to losing her life and now they are demanding money she doesn’t have.

“Chloe is the last person to ask for help when she needs it. She has been working herself to the bone to save up the money for the operation by taking on extra shifts at the hospital.

“I had this operation myself and was an inspiration for Chloe to have it done as my operation was successful, it breaks my heart and eats me up that hers has gone wrong.

Leah said the operation was initially thought to be a success until Chloe suffered a sharp pain and blood started pouring into her drain later that evening.

She added: “They had to do emergency surgery to replace the cuff and repair her spleen and they had to put her in an induced coma.

“Staff have told Chloe’s father there is a 50-50 chance of her making it and that the next 24 hours are crucial.

“It was a matter of life and death for Chloe. Her family and close friends have been very worried over the last few days, not knowing if she would make it home to her two-year-old son.

So far, more than £1,000 (Rs 1 lakh) has been raised towards the £5,000 (Rs 5.25 lakh) target to cover Chloe’s costs. The family do not wish to name the clinic involved as Chloe remains in their care.
