'Nation Stands With You': Heartbroken Fans React To Vinesh Phogat's Retirement News
Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the Women's Freestyle 50 kg event at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. She was 100 gm overweight.

Vinesh Phogat has formally announced her retirement from wrestling after her disqualification from the Women’s Freestyle 50 kg event at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. The 29-year-old was found overweight by 100 grams, which led to her direct disqualification from the final, on Wednesday. While the update sent a shockwave across the internet, leaving her supporters angry and disappointed, Phogat came forward with another blow by retiring from the sport.

On Thursday morning, Vinesh Phogat confirmed her retirement with an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter). Dedicating it to her mother, Phogat wrote, “Mother, wrestling has won and I have lost. Forgive me. Your dreams are shattered. My courage is broken. I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you. Sorry.”

The post instantly went viral, triggering emotional reactions from people from all walks of life.

A user wrote, “Champions never lose courage. The whole country of India is with you. We are proud of you.”

Another commented, “You are the pride of India. Don’t lose courage like this, the trouble today will pass tomorrow, Keep your courage.”

A person added, “And in this way, the country lost a talented player, only politics remained. Vinesh Phogat, you should not have retired now, 29 years is not a very old age for wrestlers. You could have easily played at the next Olympics. By leaving the field like this, the vultures involved in politics in India will get an opportunity, and this decision will be served to the public with 100 lies.”

“The nation stands with you, Vinesh Phogat. You must not lose your faith & strength. The Olympics must take up your issue for arbitration,” a tweet read.

A user demanded that Vinesh Phogat should be treated just the way the India cricket team are when they lose a game. “I believe Vinesh Phogat should be held to the same standards that the men in blue are treated with when they lose a match. She and her team are completely responsible for following the rules of the game and they failed. Indians are being gracious enough with their comments,” the comment read.

A fan dubbed Vinesh Phogat as the “empress of Indian Sport.”

Vinesh Phogat has won three Commonwealth Games golds, two World Championship bronze medals, and a gold medal at the Asian Games.
