Consuming rusk or biscuits with tea is a common procedure followed in almost every Indian household. We eat rusks with tea or milk and also give them to our children to eat. However, experts believe that this traditional combination is secretly harming your health and especially your kids. Did you know how much sugar, refined flour and palm oil is used to make these snacks? None of which are considered to be healthy. Well, if not then you’re at the right place.
A video is currently viral on social media depicting the unhygienic practices of preparing our so-called favourite snack. Shared by Dr Poojanpreet Kaur, a paediatrician, the clip showcases unhealthy ingredients like refined flour, palm oil and sugar being mixed in large quantities to make rusks. The visuals shared online show workers elbows deep in the batter without gloves as they mix the concoction with their hands.
The text on the clip reads, “Do not give milk and rusk as meal or snack to your child. Rusk is made with Maida, lots of Palm oil and lots of sugar.” “It is the most unhealthy thing that you can eat,” wrote Dr Kaur. “Making of it made me throw up. Please stop eating Rusk they are super unhealthy,” she added.
Sharing the video, Dr Kaur wrote in the caption, “Choose fruits or vegetables irrespective of homemade lassi or curd as snacks rather than such unhealthy options. If you give it intending to give milk then make aata biscuits at home as a healthier alternative.”
The video sparked disgust among viewers, with many questioning the safety and sanitation of commercially manufactured Rusk. An Instagram user wrote, “This is true, many bakeries do follow this process especially ujjain toast and toast which you found without packaging.” Another user wrote, “We as a country need to focus on teaching/guiding them towards hygiene practices plus use of better raw materials which are healthier.”
A person wrote, “Unhygenic next level.” “This is why you need to purchase branded rusk,” one of them wrote. However, several users also opposed the doctor. One person commented, “All germs die when baked.” Another one wrote, “Kids should be given everything in moderation, we all grew up eating all this stuff and have better immune systems than the Western population.” “I eat everything and I turned out to be okay,” wrote a person.
The clip has gathered 3.8 million views since it was shared online. What’s your take on this?
