A strange incident in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur recently went viral, involving a 70-year-old man named Bhaiyaram Pal. While grazing his buffalo near his home, some villagers sitting under a tree called out to him and offered him a prize. As Bhaiyaram approached, they spoke kindly and offered him free gutkha. They then explained how they received various gifts such as motorcycles, refrigerators, and washing machines, showing him supposed prizes. They invited Bhaiyaram to open one, claiming it was a motorcycle, and another, which they said was a refrigerator. Falling for the scam, Bhaiyaram was persuaded to retrieve Rs 9,000 from his home to open a prize, only to discover it contained three pieces of cloth, several metres long. The scammers quickly vanished, leaving Bhaiyaram in shock, as they never asked for his name or details.
Bhaiyaram Pal expressed deep regret, sharing that he had saved the Rs 9,000 for ploughing and planting his Rabi crops. Tempted by the false promise of a motorcycle, he lost his hard-earned money. He was so distressed that he neither ate nor slept for two days. Now, Bhaiyaram warns others to beware of fraudsters, or else they too lose their savings and be unable to tend to their fields.
Similarly, a few years ago, the son of a Telangana farmer was cheated by cyber fraudsters in an online game, where he lost Rs 92 lakh, an amount received under land compensation by his father, in an online game.
Couple Srinivas Reddy and Vijayalakshmi belong to an agriculture-based family and reside in Seetharamapuram village of Shabad Mandal in Rangareddy district, Telangana. Their elder son Sripal has been pursuing BTech in Hyderabad and the younger one Harshavardhan Reddy is an undergraduate student at Nizam College in the same city.
The State government has handed over their land to the TSIIC and compensated the land with an amount of Rs 1.05 crore at the rate of Rs 10.5 lakh per acre. Srinivas decided to purchase a half-acre of land at Mallapur in Shamshabad Mandal and gave some advance. He deposited the remaining amount of Rs 1 crore into his bank and his wife’s accounts.
