Do you consider yourself a cheese connoisseur? If yes, then you must love your sandwiches, pizzas, burgers and pasta being loaded with this gooey delight. But if given the opportunity, would you try a desi cheese alternative? Recently, a food vlogger shared a video on Instagram presenting a scrumptious Indian substitute to the delicious cheeseburger. The name of the cheesy snack item is Kaladi Kulcha.
US food vlogger Karl Rock treated himself to the one-of-a-kind dish in Jammu, labelling it as “India’s very own Cheeseburger!” “This is Jammu’s famous Kaladi Kulcha. It features Kaladi, a traditional ripened cheese known for its dense and stretchy texture, pan-fried to a crispy golden brown, paired with Kulcha, a soft and slightly crispy leavened flatbread,” read a part of his caption.
The video depicted a vendor frying bread buns in a pan before toasting them and layering them with a thick clump of cheese in between. After sprinkling masalas and other vegetable fillings, the vendor covered it with another bread bun. Rock explained that the cheese, known as kaladi, was made from raw milk and its flavor intensified when fried. Kaladi can be produced from either cow milk or buffalo milk. Expressing surprise and disappointment, Rock lamented that apart from Jammu, Kaladi Kulcha is not available anywhere else.
Sharing a detailed note on the accompaniments, Karl Rock wrote, “This combination is often enjoyed with various chutneys and a sprinkle of spices, offering a delightful contrast between the gooey, savoury cheese and the fresh bread, making it a unique and flavorful culinary experience.” This gives the customers a distinct and flavorful culinary experience.
Reacting to the streetside dish a user wrote, “Jammu food is highly underrated. Thank you Karl for covering this.” “Finally Jammu’s street food is getting the recognition it deserves,” agreed another. “This made me so hungry,” admitted a foodie.
Karl Rock shared that this Kaladi Kulcha was being sold for Rs 60 but the vendor did not allow him to pay, underling Jammu’s hospitality. So far, the video has garnered over 6 million views.
