We all know about the coveted gold, silver and bronze medals that athletes receive after winning at the 2024 Paris Olympics events. However, that is not it. They are also given a special, mysterious golden box with the medals, something that has intrigued viewers over what could be inside. Australian swimming champion Brianna Throssell recently revealed the box’s secret in a video on her Instagram.
“Take a guess at what’s inside the box we receive at the medal ceremony? Is it a baguette? A giant Toblerone? Watch and find out,” she wrote on Instagram.
As Brianna Throssell reveals the contents of the golden box on camera, viewers can see a poster for this year’s Summer Games, designed quite meticulously and with precise details.
However, the gift didn’t impress many social media users. One user commented, “Even we French people were hoping for a giant Toblerone,” while another said, “I thought it was a lightsaber. Now the Olympics doesn’t seem as exciting anymore.”
“They should give out plushies of the mascot like they did at Tokyo 2020,” one suggested. Meanwhile, many also appreciated the gesture and praised the artwork. One wrote, “Better than the flowers. Least this can be kept in top condition for a long time,” while another wrote, “Limited edition of this beautiful artwork with the color of the medal the athlete received on the Paris 2024 logo at the top on the left (here gold) Congrats.”
“I think it’s pretty cool. Usually they get flowers or something, this is something the athletes can bring home, frame, and hang on their walls,” a comment read.
While fans remained super curious about these slim gift boxes, the International Olympic Committee had earlier confirmed the official poster, designed by French artist Ugo Gattoni. It took him 2,000 hours in four months to design it and fans can also buy it online or in Paris, states a report from USA Today.
Meanwhile, these are not the only gifts that the athletes receive. After the ceremony, the athletes are given a plushie of the Games’ official mascot, the Phryges. The medal emblem is sewn into the mascot’s belly, along with the text ‘Bravo’ in French on its back.
