Chef Gordon Ramsay in his Father’s Day message said he was ‘lucky to be here’ following a cycling accident in the US state of Connecticut and highlighted the importance of using helmets while riding cycles and two-wheelers.
He also showed how serious were the injuries that he suffered in a video posted to his social media and even lifted his chef’s whites to show the large purple-coloured bruise on his torso. He said he required hospital treatment for his injury.
“I’d like to share a very important message with you all. You know how much I love cycling and triathlon and Ironman [races] etc and this week, unfortunately, I had a really bad accident and it really shook me and honestly I’m lucky to be here,” Gordon said in his video.
Then, addressing the message to “all the dads out there” ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday, he highlighted the importance of wearing a helmet.
“I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care… These helmets cost money, but they’re crucial, even with a kid’s short journey, they’ve got to wear a helmet. Now, I’m lucky to be standing here. I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week. And I’m sort of getting through it,” the celebrity chef said.
“I want to wish you all a happy Father’s Day, but please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn’t, honestly, I wouldn’t be here now,” he further added.
The 57-year-old thanked Connecticut’s Lawrence and Memorial Hospital’s trauma surgeons and nurses who looked after him. “Those incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, nurses in the hospitals looked after me this week, they were amazing but honestly, you’ve got to wear helmets,” he said.
He also shared a before and after photograph showing the damage sustained by his helmet on Instagram. He said that he did not “break any bones or suffer any major injuries” but was “a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato”.
