A new portrait of the Princess of Wales, which was unveiled on Wednesday, has faced some backlash on social media platforms. Painted by artist Hannah Uzor, it features Kate Middleton in a Jenny Packham white dress with a blue ribbon, worn at a 2022 state banquet.
Published on Tatler magazine’s July cover, the portrait honours Kate’s courage during her cancer battle. Titled ‘The Princess of Wales – A Portrait of Strength and Dignity,’ the artwork drew mixed reactions on social media. Many users felt it didn’t accurately capture Middleton’s likeness. Some praised the artist’s effort but questioned its resemblance to Middleton’s face. A few even wondered if it was a parody.

Despite criticism, some internet users supported the portrait, expressing their approval. Middleton didn’t pose for the portrait, taking a break from her duties due to her cancer diagnosis. Artist Hannah Uzor acknowledged the challenge of painting Middleton, one of the world’s most scrutinised figures. In an interview with Tatler magazine, Uzor discussed her approach, studying numerous photos from the Getty archive to accurately depict Middleton. However, social media users are not pleased with the portrait.
The portrait’s unveiling follows that of King Charles III’s official portrait at Buckingham Palace. However, it also faced criticism for its prominent red background and tone.
