A few years ago, Dodge stole a big march on the rest of the muscle car industry by introducing the 707 horsepower Challenger and Charger Hellcat models. Although specially tuned versions of rival cars have been offered since with more horsepower than the Dodge Hellcats can boast, nobody has yet come up with a straight production model to rival them. In fact, Dodge has even upped the power ante recently with the Challenger Demon. Well, it now appears Ford is intent on fighting back as it's just released a teaser video of what it's describing as "the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever."

Ford already caught the industry napping a little by unexpectedly announcing the Mustang Bullitt at this year's Detroit Auto Show, but some commentators had hoped the Blue Oval would have been bolder and gone further by revealing a new Shelby GT500. To be honest, the Mustang Bullitt would probably have been enough by itself to satisfy muscle car fans, but after the first day of the North American International Auto Show Ford surprised everyone again with a new video teasing the GT500 many had hoped to see in Detroit.
Although no specifics about the power and performance of the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 are made in the video or the accompanying press release from Ford, the game is somewhat given away with a statement in the release. The statement says, "Loaded with the most venom ever, the all-new Mustang Shelby GT500 with its 700-plus horsepower supercharged V-8 will be the most powerful street-legal production Ford ever."

So, let's be honest here. If Ford is claiming "700-plus horsepower," for the new GT500, there's no way it's going to come in below the 707 horsepower of the Hellcats. However, as Ford also says the "all new Mustang Shelby GT500 to attack tracks, drag strips in 2019," it might be more of a stripped-down track day car than a comfortable and well-equipped daily driver as the Hellcats invariably are. Of course, we'll have to wait until later in the year to find out more details.
