Mahindra Thar 5-Door Expected To Be Named Armada, Details Here
Mahindra has registered trademarks for the Cult, Rex, and Savannah names for the five-door Thar in addition to Thar Armada.

Mahindra has a number of exciting new releases planned for 2024, but the 5-door Thar may be the most significant one.

It appears that Mahindra has finally decided on a moniker for the upcoming SUV—seven, to be exact. According to Hindustan Times (HT) Auto, the Thar Armada is one of the names that has been trademarked, bringing back a previous moniker from the company’s repertoire.

Mahindra has filed for trademarks on the following seven names: Armada, Cult, Rex, Roxx, Savannah, Gladius, and Centurion. These will be added to ‘Thar’ as a suffix to indicate the larger, five-door body style. Out of these, only Armada has a recall value; the other names are brand-new, reports add.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door: History on Armada

Originally designed with urban buyers in mind, the Armada was the brand’s flagship product when it was first released in the early 1990s. It was a more expensive option to the somewhat basic Commander SUV of the era, and it was the forerunner of the Bolero. Its design was directly influenced by Jeep SUVs. In 2001, the Armada was eventually superseded by the Bolero, which is still in production today.

Since the Armada nameplate has sentimental significance, it might be the most appropriate choice for the 5-door SUV’s distinctive identity that will help differentiate it from the standard Thar.

The original Armada was a five-door, hardtop, tough, yet elegant SUV, so conceptually, it isn’t all that different. It is important to note that registering these names as trademarks does not ensure that they will be used, though.

Mahindra Thar 5-Door: Details That We Know So Far

Along the lines of Maruti Suzuki’s Jimny 5-door, Mahindra aims to broaden the appeal of the Thar with this version, which is geared towards those looking for a tough, all-terrain SUV with more comfort and utility. Meanwhile, the second row and boot should have more room thanks to its longer wheelbase.

Furthermore, its three-door sibling will have a slightly different design, as hinted by camouflaged test mules. It will also have more interior features, such as a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen and a sunroof. It is probably going to keep the same 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre petrol and diesel engines under the hood, coupled with the same 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes.

Reportedly, it is anticipated that the five-door Thar will go on sale in the middle of 2024 and cost a significant amount more than the standard Thar, probably between Rs 16 lakh and Rs 20 lakh (ex-showroom).
