Electric car maker giant, Tesla is planning to open a manufacturing plant in Gujarat in 2024.
According to reports, the negotiations for the establishment of the first manufacturing unit of the electric vehicle (EV) maker in India have reached their final stage and are expected to conclude soon.
As per Ahmedabad Mirror report, the announcement regarding the Tesla manufacturing unit in the state is likely to take place at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Summit, which will be held in January 2024.
Gujarat has long been a strategic location for the business environment. Automakers such as Maruti Suzuki already have manufacturing plants in the state. Furthermore, Ahmedabad Mirror further reports that the Tesla manufacturing plant could be located in Sanand, Becharaji, or Dholera.
There has been no official announcement in this regard from either the electric vehicle manufacturer or the state government. Meanwhile, Gujarat Health Minister, Rushikesh Patel recently expressed optimism about Elon Musk’s investment in Gujarat.
On December 28, Gujarat Minister Rushikesh Patel addressed a cabinet briefing, drawing a parallel between the state’s awareness and alignment with Tesla’s overarching goals. He also stated that the government is actively negotiating with the EV manufacturer to finalise the agreement for the establishment of the manufacturing plant in Gujarat.
Why Is Tesla Exclusively Interested in Gujarat?
Reports claim that Gujarat has become a top choice for Tesla to locate its manufacturing facility, in part due to the state government’s policies as well as the region’s accessibility to ports for the company’s products to be exported. Due to their proximity to Gujarat’s Kandla-Mundra port, places like Sanand could see an increase in exports from the EV manufacturer.

In support of equitable growth and sustainable development, the summit provides a global platform for business networking, knowledge exchange, and strategic collaborations.
According to reports, Tesla will sign Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. In addition, the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, is also expected to speak at the Summit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Elon Musk during his recent visit to the United States (US), and Union Minister Piyush Goyal recently visited a Tesla facility in the United States. Apart from Gujarat, many other states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana, have invited Tesla to establish plants in their respective states.
