With this, Indigo is set to enter widebody space aircraft and will enhance its fleet in long-haul global destinations.

In a recent development, IndiGo, a leading domestic airline, has finalised an order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft. This strategic move, as disclosed in an exchange filing on April 24th, is set to significantly enhance the carrier’s capacity for network expansion.

The agreement marks a significant milestone for IndiGo, as it marks the airline’s venture into the wide-body aircraft segment, reinforcing its position as India’s largest carrier while strengthening its fleet.

The latest development comes after India’s top airline by market share placed a mega single order of 500 aircraft with Airbus in June 2023.

The low-cost carrier expects deliveries to start from 2027.

Indigo currently has a fleet of 350 aircraft with 1000 more to arrive in the next decade.

With this, Indigo is set to enter widebody space aircraft and will enhance its fleet in long-haul global destinations.

Pieter Elbers, chief executive officer, IndiGo, said, “For IndiGo, after successfully pioneering the Indian skies with an unprecedented journey, its fleet of 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft will allow IndiGo to embark on its next phase of becoming one of the leading global aviation players. This reaffirms IndiGo’s belief in, and commitment to, the growth of India, and in our strategic partnership with Airbus.”

This is in line with the government’s aim to boost aviation and domestic players.

Airbus A350 is powered by Rolls Royce XWB ENGINE and is fuel efficient.

The exact configuration of the aircraft will be decided at a later stage, and the deliveries are expected to start in 2027.

In addition to the 30 Firm A350-900 order, IndiGo has Purchase Rights for an additional 70 Airbus A350 Family aircraft, at its discretion, for possible future needs under certain conditions.

Air India’s fleet

Air India will acquire 40 A350s, comprising 20 A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft, along with 140 narrow-body A321neo and 70 A320neo planes.

Air India’s first wide-body A350-900 aircraft arrived in India last year.
