Airports modernisation to go full steam
Airports modernisation to go full steam
Despite opposition from the left, govt is drawing up a privatisation model for 10 more airports across the country.

New Delhi: Gleaming modern buildings of steel and glass will replace old airport terminal buildings at cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, and Srinagar.

For instance, Jaipur is an international airport and a major tourist destination. But the airport is not capable enough to handle the traffic.

But as a part of modernisation drive, by the year 2008, the monument-like airport building would be replaced by a modern building of steel and glass, fully air-conditioned with all the modern facilities that a passenger could ask for.

Private companies will be involved in developing these airports.

Airport Authority of India Chairman Ramalingam said, "Private companies will be involved in developing city side of the terminal building".

"Airports Authority will be involved in renovating the runways, building aerobridges and aircraft parking bays. It will also upgrade the communication equipment."

"The private players will be brought in to develop the commercial property which will include shopping malls in the terminal building," he added.

In the first phase 12 airports have been chosen. The idea was to include large state capitals, international airports and major tourist destinations.

Cities taken up for airport upgradation are - Jaipur, Udaipur, Srinagar, Amritsar, and Ambala in the north; Thiruvananthapuram, Vishakapatnam, Mangalore and Trichy in the south; Goa in the west; and Nagpur and Varanasi in central India.

The cost of upgradation could be about Rs 1,500 crore.
