New Delhi: The new facade of Delhi's busy domestic airport is indeed a calculated one. This includes the new traffic flow pattern, which is designed by the IIT.
At the helm of affairs of Delhi airport is the Chairman of GMR, who hopes to make you comfortable. But then, there are challenges.
"The way the traffic is growing, there will be congestion till the new terminal is built we will have to work around it. Before the Commonwealth Games, we have to build world-class airports so that every Indian feels proud of the airports," says Chairman of GMR, GM Rao.
Traffic will remain congested until new terminals and parallel runways are built. But such concrete changes will be seen only by 2010. Till then, we can only expect cosmetic ones.
The new management will focus on 5 T's to begin with. These include getting rid of touts, more trolleys for passengers, cleaner toilets, more ticketing counters and better traffic management system, which is specifically being designed by IIT.
Passengers are looking forward to the change. While Anita, a passenger, expects a better organised airport; others like Narendra, a hotelier, say, "I am seeing construction but I hope things will improve."
Both companies have a tough task ahead. Apart from investing in infrastructure, they will also have to keep the 5,000 odd employees passed on from Airports Authority in good humour.
Despite the Airport Unions opposing the privatisation, the three month transition period has been smooth. With the complete takeover coming into ffect from Wednesday midnight, the clock has started ticking.
