Although inflation stands at 3.59 per cent, it is still substantially lower than staggering 5.67 per cent of last year.

New Delhi: Wholesale prices-based inflation rose by 0.05 per cent to stand at 3.59 per cent during the week ended April 29 as against 3.54 per cent a week ago owing to food items going dearer.

However, the inflation was pegged at 5.67 per cent during the same week previous year.

The rise in inflation rate was moderate but analysts said it could see steep increase once the Government decides to pass on surging global oil prices to customers, which will have cascading effect on other product prices as well.

The wholesale price index for all commodities rose by 0.1 per cent to 199 points during the week ended April 29 from 198.8 points of the previous week.

Among food items, prices of poultry chicken rose by 14 per cent, while eggs became expensive by 6 per cent followed by barley (3 per cent), wheat (2 per cent) and urad, fruits and vegetables and gram by (1 per cent each).

However, the prices of tea fell by 9 per cent, moong and jowar declined by 2 per cent each and pork, arhar and ragi moved down by one per cent each.

The index for food articles group rose by 0.5 per cent to 198.2 points from 197.3 points.

In the non-food articles category, cottonseed became dearer by 2 per cent, and copra, raw cotton and groundnut seed were dearer by 1 per cent each.

However, the prices of coir fibre declined by 20 per cent, fodder by 7 per cent, raw silk by 3 per cent, raw jute by 2 per cent and niger seed by 1 per cent.

The index for fuel, power, light and lubricants category, which has a weight of 14.23 per cent in the Inflation index remained unchanged at the previous week's level of 316.8 pionts.

Interestingly, manufactured product, which has the highest weightage in the inflation figure also remained unchanged at 173.9 level.

Prices of unblended black tea leaf going dipped by 11 per cent. It is followed 5 per cent reduction in rawa and processed tea while atta and bran each went down by 3 per cent.

However, prices of imported edible oil, oil cakes and gur became dearer by 2 per cent.

Leather and leather products witnessed a downfall of 2.2 per cent owing to lower prices of footwear western type.

During the week prices of pvc fitting and accessories slipped by 16 per cent while other board paper got dearer by 5 per cent.

Prices of Zinc during the week shot up by 21 per cent, other aluminium material also saw an uptrend of 4 per cent.

In Machinery and Machine Tool category power loom automatic, cranes, power driven pumps prices shot up by four per cent, two per cent, one per cent respectively.

Inflation has been revised at 3.86 per cent during the week ended March 3 from the provisional estimate of 4.02 per cent and wholesale price index at 196.5 points from 196.8 points.
