New Delhi: Braving all the political melodrama, a team of Tata Motors officials on Monday began survey of land at Singur in West Bengal for the company's proposed car project.
Sources in Tata Motors said that the team had surveyed the land, which had been fenced by the administration through WBIDC.
According to the sources, company officials would regularly visit the site for preparing a detailed plan for construction of the plant.
Last week, another team of Tata Motors officials had held technical discussions relating to setting up of the plant.
The team had visited the offices of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority and other state government agencies.
Tata Motors plans to invest around Rs 1,000 crore for the car plant. The company had sought 1,000 acre from the government for this purpose.
The company plans to roll-out its first car from the Singur plant in 2008.
The land acquisition had created uproar both in political arena as well as among Singur peasants, sharply dividing left wing and right wing parties.
West Bengal government had to take some tough stands amid wide criticism to go ahead with the planned acquisition.
West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee insists that Singur will be the first significant milestone in Bengal's journey towards re-industrialisation.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee’s hunger strike against land acquisition entered the 15th day on Monday.
