These kolu dolls are mostly made of clay or wood, they represent various facets of everyday life. As Navaratri is arriving, the sale of kolu has already begun in many places down South. One such place is Virudhunagar District in Tamil Nadu. Let’s take a look.
According to reports, kolu dolls are prepared in various parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in Sarvodaya Sangam in Virudhunagar. Apart from idols of leaders and deities, different dolls are prepared this time and are available for sale. Kolu puppets are new this year. They are used to narrate mythological stories.
Reports suggest that on the occasion of Navratri, the Virudhunagar Sarvodaya Sangam is giving a 10 per cent discount on every toy, and this discount and sale will continue till Saraswati Puja.
The workers in the Karadipakkam area of Tamil Nadu have also started making Kolu toys with full enthusiasm. They have shared their unique process of making these Kolu dolls with News18.
In a recent media interaction, a local toy manufacturer said that they make 30 types of Kolu toys using paper pulp. He also shared the making process. He claims that firstly, a mixture to make Kolu dolls is needed. Ingredients include gum powder, yam flour, maida, cement, and paper pulp. According to him, making a simple Kolu doll requires at least five days. The worker further said that the cost of a Kolu doll ranges from Rs 300 to Rs 2,500.
