BCCI Invites Applications for One National Selector; New Appointment Likely From North
Salil Ankola from West Zone is likely to make way for a candidate from North as BCCI invites applications for position of National Selector (Senior Men).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the position of National Selector (Senior Men).

The deadline to apply for the position is January 25 and as per the cricket board’s media advisory, the candidate “Should have played a minimum of a) 7 Test matches; OR b) 30 First Class matches; OR c) 10 ODIs and 20 First Class matches. Should have retired from the game at least 5 years ago. No person who has been a member of any Cricket Committee (as defined in the rules and regulations of BCCI) for a total of 5 years shall be eligible to be a member of Men’s Selection Committee.”

Ajit Agarkar (west) currently heads the men’s senior selection committee also featuring Salil Ankola (west), SS Das (east), S Sharath (south) and Subroto Banerjee (central). Ever since Agarkar took over as the chairman, there were speculations of Salil Ankola getting replaced by a suitable candidate from the North zone, which doesn’t have representation in the current panel.

There is no mandate in the Indian cricket board’s constitution to have representation from all zones but the BCCI has followed the practice of having candidates from the five zones in the past. BCCI advertisement has no mention of inviting applications from the North zone or which selector would make way but CricketNext has reliably learnt that to continue with equal representation, Ankola is likely to make way for a candidate from the North. We reached out to multiple associations in the North zone and they are deliberating over potential candidates from their respective states.

“The advertisement has come today. We will discuss the matter internally and see which best candidate can be asked to apply,” says a senior office bearer.

Chetan Sharma was North Zone’s last representative when he was chairman of the men’s senior selection committee. The former India cricketer was reinstated for a second term in January last year but it lasted only two months as he resigned from the position after a TV sting operation.

The Cricket Advisory Committee comprising Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik and Jatin Paranjape will now interview the eligible and shortlisted candidates after January 25 and a new selector is likely to join Agarkar’s panel during the Test series vs England.
