Former Pakistan Coach Applies For Kerala Ranji Team Top Job: Report
Kerala finished fourth in Elite Group B last Ranji Trophy and didn't qualify for the quarterfinals.

Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) is searching for a new head coach ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 domestic season and has received as many as 10 applications for the top job. M Venkataramana, who was in charge of Kerala last season, stepped down citing personal reasons.

As per a report in Onmanorama, among the applicants is former Australia fast bowler and 2007 ODI World Cup winner Shaun Tait.

Known for his raw pace, Tait played 3 Tests, 35 ODIs and 21 T20Is between 2005 and 2016 taking 95 wickets across formats. He has earlier served as the bowling coach of Pakistan cricket team.

Interestingly, Tait is said to have also applied for the head coach role of Punjab cricket team as well.

“We have received over 45 applicants for the head coach role of the Punjab senior team. Two of the prominent names are former India opener Wasim Jaffer and former Australia speedster Shaun Tait. The process is still underway and we will announce the name by next week,” a Punjab Cricket Association official was quoted as saying by The Indian Express last month.

The Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will get underway from October 11 with the final slated for February 26. Mumbai will enter the season as the defending champions having beaten Vidarbha earlier this year to lift a record-extending 42nd title – their first since 2015-16.

Meanwhile, the Indian domestic season starts with the Duleep Trophy, a four-team red-ball competition, from the first week of September.

Considering the proximity of the tournament with India’s next Test assignment – a two-match series against Bangladesh at home – the selectors reportedly want the international stars to take part to get into red-ball mode.

Test captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli along with rising stars like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal are among the top names who may play in Duleep Trophy. However, the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin might be exempted.
