Virat Kohli set the Chinnaswamy Stadium ablaze on Monday night when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) chased 177 against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2024 match no.6. The crowd witnessed a Kohli classic and then a vintage finisher in Dinesh Karthik as the hosts registered their first win this season.
Kohli hammered 77 runs off 49 balls with the help of 2 sixes and 11 boundaries. The Kings dropped him twice, on 0 and 33, and went on to pay a massive price. His dismissal in the 16th over, off Harshal Patel’s bowling, looked like a possible turnover but Dinesh Karthik and ‘Impact Sub’ Mahipal Lomror joined forces to seal the game in RCB’s favour.

The cricket fraternity bowed down to Kohli who not only set the base for RCB’s thumping win but also completed 100 fifty-plus scores in the shortest format of the game. Heaping praise on his former teammate, Jio Cinema expert AB de Villiers stated that Kohli would be disappointed over getting out before he could finish the game.

“I could see it in his eyes, this guy meant business tonight and nobody was going to stand in his way. Unfortunately, he didn’t finish it at the back end. He would have wanted to. Knowing him, he will be analysing tonight in his room, ‘Why didn’t I finish that game?’ He’s very hard on himself sometimes. He’s creeping up there on the list of most 50+ scores with the other guys in IPL history. He’s an amazing player, he played fantastically well tonight. He kept it together, kept them in the game. Well played, Virat,” De Villiers said on Jio Cinema.
The former South Africa captain also highlighted the finishing touch given by veteran Dinesh Karthik with a fiery 10-ball 28 not-out. RCB needed 47 from 24 balls when Karthik and Lomror carried them past the rope. De Villiers lauded the Karthik’s calmness with which he sailed the Bengaluru ship safely to the shore.
“DK, what an addition to the middle order in a finishing role from a few years back. I thought it was quite a bold move from RCB back in the day, a guy who doesn’t play that often, but the calmness he brings and how smart he is. He didn’t take a lot of risk, he’s very calculated. He knew they couldn’t afford to lose another wicket. 28 off 10 balls at the back end, whether it’s good or bad bowling, it’s an exceptional effort… All in all, a match-winning finish from him, and I’m very proud of him,” de Villiers concluded.
