Rishabh Pant rode his luck and was given as many as three lives by Pakistan fielders to score 42 off 31.

Pakistan fielders were in a generous mood on Sunday as they gave two lives to India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as the two opponents squared off in a T20 World Cup 2024 Group A match in New York.

Pant could’ve been dismissed as early as when he was batting on 4 in the sixth over. Left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir got one to move away and Pant went for a drive, got a thick outside edge and Iftikhar Ahmed attempted but couldn’t get his hands onto the ball as it zoomed away for a four.

The next reprieve came off the next delivery of the same over as Pant went for a flick only to get a leading edge with Usman Khan running back at covers but failing to take the catch. Pant was on eight.

Pant was given a third life when he was on 18. This time it came off the bowling of Imad Wasim as Pant attempted a slog-sweep only to top-edge it towards midwicket region where Usman failed to take the catch while running in.

Pant was living dangerously but thanks to the dropped chances, managed to score 42 off 31 with the help of six fours. He finally fell to Amir with Pakistan captain Babar Azam taking the catch.

Pakistan won the toss and opted to bowl first and bowled out India for 119 in 19 overs at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium.

The start to the contest was delayed by rain and there was another short rain-break after the first over of the match. India lost Virat Kohli early upon resumption and despite a few early blows, the former champions took control and reached 89/3 in 11 overs.

However, Pakistan made a strong comeback to bowl out India for the first time in a T20I match. Rishabh Pant was the top-scorer with 42 off 31 while Axar Patel made 20 off 18.
