Star India cricketer Ishan Kishan will captain Jharkhand at the upcoming Buchi Babu tournament in Tamil Nadu. With India comeback on his mind, Ishan decided to play the red-ball tournament that starts from August 15.
The wicketkeeper-batter’s name initially wasn’t part of Jharkhand squad for the competition and was drafted in later on.

“With Ishan, it was never about ability,” a JSCA functionary was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. “It was only about whether he was ready to return. The decision was with him. When he was not included in the initial list, it was only because we hadn’t heard from him. The moment he expressed his keenness to return, he was drafted in.”
Ishan hit the headlines last year when he returned midway through the South Africa tour citing ‘travel fatigue’. While away from international cricket, he skipped Ranji Trophy and instead trained with allrounder Hardik Pandya in Baroda.
The decision didn’t sit well with the national selectors and consequently, Ishan wasn’t handed an annual contract by the BCCI.
Ishan last played international cricket in November 2023 and since then, IPL is the only high-profile tournament he has been part of.
In the absence of Rishabh Pant, he was given Test debut last year against West Indies but since his decision to take a break from cricket, KS Bharat and then Dhruv Jurel were preferred for the wicketkeeper’s role in red-ball cricket by India, pushing Ishan down the pecking order.
Ishan did break his silence on his prolonged absence from cricket citing travel fatigue.
“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. But I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that,” he told The Indian Express in an interview.
