David Warner put in a Player of the Match-winning performance scoring 70 off 36 deliveries against the West Indies in the first T20I at Hobart. The opening batter revealed his plans for the future when speaking in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Australia managed to secure the win by 11 runs. Speaking after picking up the Player of the Match Award, Warner revealed his intentions to retire from the T20I format. He said, “Pleasing to get the win on the board. Was a nice wicket to bat on and you have to make the most of it. Feel great and refreshed, I’m pumped. I want to play the T20 World Cup and finish there and it’s a good journey we’ve got going for the next 6 months. Pretty much the same squad going to New Zealand so it’s important we win there as well.

The 37-year-old had recently retired from Tests and ODIs following the three-match red-ball series against Pakistan at home. Warner finished as the third-highest run-scorer in the series with 299 runs in the three games played. Warner ended his Test career having won the World Test Championship in 2023.
The batter from New South Wales also brought an end to his fifty-over career having won the ICC ODI World Cup in 2023 defeating an unbeaten India to clinch the finals. This made it his second instance winning the prestigious ODI trophy.
Warner is among the few who have won the three major ICC trophies. He won the T20 World Cup back in 2021, also winning the Player of the tournament award for scoring a half-century in the finals and finishing as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

The batter from Sydney is the second-highest run-scorer in the shortest format for Australia and also joined the likes of Virat Kohli and Ross Taylor to share the record of having 100 international appearances in T20Is, ODIs and Tests each.
Australia will be banking on Warner to deliver for the upcoming T20 World Cup as they aim to complete the treble after securing both the World Test Championship and ODI World Cup.
The Aussies will now travel to Adelaide where they will look to seal the series with the second win in the three-match affair.
