Five-time IPL champion Mumbai Indians is all set to retain Indian captain Rohit Sharma ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions. According to a report in Indian Express on Thursday (October 17), Rohit, who is MI’s most capped player and leading run scorer in IPL history, is likely to be one of the four players retained by the franchise. Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav are also set to be retained by the Mumbai-based franchise.
It has been reported that MI will aim to buy wicketkeeper batsman Ishan Kishen at the auction and use the RTM for Australian batter Tim David.
Rohit, who led MI to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, made his IPL debut for MI in 2011, and since then he has been associated with them. Rohit was removed from MI’s captaincy last year, but he played in all 14 matches for the franchise in IPL 2024 and finished as the leading run scorer.
It will, however, be interesting to see the amount for which he is retained. As per the retention rules, a franchise can retain as many as six players ahead of the mega auction, but of those, one has to be an uncapped Indian player.
It has also been reported that inaugural edition winners Rajasthan Royals will retain Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Riyan Parag, and they are also in talks with England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler. Buttler has been associated with RR since 2018.
Delhi Capitals will also retain three players—Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, and Kuldeep Yadav—whereas SRH is reportedly keen to retain as many as five players.
It was reported by ESPNCricinfo on Wednesday that the Orange Army will retain South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen for Rs 23 crore and Australia’s Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins for Rs 18 crore. Indian batter Abhishek Sharma is also set to continue his association with SRH and will be retained for Rs 14 crore. Apart from these three, the 2024 IPL losing finalists are also keen to retain Australian batter Travis Head and Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
