Shreyas Iyer Says 'That Is What We Play For', Moments After Winning IPL 2024 Title
Shreyas Iyer became only the fifth Indian captain to lift the Indian Premier League trophy.

Kolkata Knight Riders skipper Shreyas Iyer was all fired up moments after guiding his franchise to a third Indian Premier League (IPL) crown. Kolkata produced a spectacle at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, recording one of the most dominant wins in the tournament’s history. The Sunrisers Hyderabad were simply no match to the Shreyas-led side in Chepauk as they lost the match by eight wickets. Moments after the final came to a close, the Kolkata skipper could be seen walking towards his teammates with his bat and a stump in his hands. He then loudly says, “This is what we play for” and then tossed his glove in the air.

Towards the end of the video, Shreyas Iyer was seen hugging his overseas teammates Sunil Narine and Mitchell Starc. He could be heard shouting, “Yes! Come on”. The Kolkata skipper was elated with his side’s historic triumph.

Shreyas Iyer later shared a post talking about how the entire Kolkata family had worked hard to make the dream come true. “To my entire KKR family, we’ve worked tirelessly for this moment. We’ve played for each other, we’ve sacrificed so much for each other, and it’s to get our hands on this prized trophy,” Shreyas said. He then thanked his fellow players and the coaching staff by saying, “To the owners, management, coaching staff, my teammates and the fans, from the bottom of my heart, thank you IPL Champions 2024,” Shreyas wrote. He also added a couple of pictures from the trophy-lifting ceremony to the post.

Shreyas Iyer has proven to be a pillar during his time at the Kolkata Knight Riders since his arrival to the club in 2022. Following a captaincy snub at the Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer was released for the IPL auction. He was bought by the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise for a fee of Rs 12.25 crores. In his debut season, Shreyas donned the role of skipper and added 401 runs but a back injury prevented him from competing next year in 2023. As for this season, the ex-Delhi Capitals player regained his form to add 351 runs in the tournament. He scored two fifties while maintaining an average of 39.00 and a strike rate of 146.86.

Having secured Kolkata Knight Riders’ third crown, Shreyas Iyer has now become only the fifth Indian captain to lift the IPL trophy. He is the eighth overall skipper to have secured this accolade. Shreyas has joined the likes of MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Gautam Gambhir, Hardik Pandya, Shane Warne, Adam Gilchrist and David Warner.
