Shubman Gill Breaks Virat Kohli's Century Record To Take No. 2 Position In Elite List Led By Rohit Sharma
A century in the second innings of the ongoing first India-Bangladesh Test helps Gill take his tally of 100s to five in 26 WTC matches for India.

Shubman Gill scored a century for India in the second innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday (September 21) to leapfrog Virat Kohli and take No. 2 position in the list of batters with most centuries for India in the World Test Championship. The century on Saturday against Bangladesh is Gill’s fifth century in Test cricket as well as WTC, which has now helped him go past Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and Mayank Agarwal’s tally of four centuries each.

The overall record of scoring most 100s for India in WTC history is in the name of captain Rohit Sharma. The 37-year-old right-handed batter has crossed the 100-run mark nine times in 33 WTC matches played so far.

  • Rohit Sharma – 9

Gill completed his century with a single on the fourth ball of the 60th over of Indian innings, which was bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz. During his stay at the crease so far, the 25-year-old right-handed batter has faced 161 balls and hammered nine fours and three sixes.

He had earlier completed his fifty with two sixes off Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s bowling in the first session of the third day’s play.

Gill, who scored a century for India in his last Test as well against England in Dharamsala on March 8, 2024, was unable to open his account in the first innings. He was sent back to the pavilion by Hasan Mahmud for an eight-ball duck.

But he has silenced his critics with a super show with the bat in the second inning. The 25-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 3 for India and added 167 runs for the fourth wicket with Rishabh Pant, who scored 109 runs from 128 balls on his Test comeback.

He was sent back to the pavilion by Mehidy Hasan Miraz on the third ball of the 56th over. But before returning back to the dugout, the 26-year-old wicketkeeper-batter hammered 13 fours and four sixes during his stay at the crease.
