O Captain! My Captain! Well, that’s a bit of a stretch; but still, how much do you miss Virat Kohli, the Indian captain? In the long list of Indian captains Kohli is surely to rank in the top3, or top 5, or top 2 for the die-hard Viratians (is this still in use?) and ever since he led go of the Indian captaincy for Rohit Sharma to take over reins, there have been plenty of those fleeting moments when the captain inside Kohli comes to life. Rohit Sharma for his part is always open to bringing in the expertise of his current opening partner.

We witnessed one of those moments once again during India’s final T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Group 1 fixture against Australia at the Daren Sammy International Stadium Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday when Kohli fielding alongside Rohit Sharma could not hold himself back from maneuvering the field; even as Rohit had the same thing in mind.
In a hilarious video clip from the match that is now doing the rounds on social media, Kohli and Rohit can be seen gesturing for a fielder (not in frame) to come in. Both Rohit and Kohli’s actions are in sync and it makes for a happy viewing.

As for the match, a belligerent Rohit Sharma took India to victory as the 2007 champions got the better of the 2021 champions by 24 runs, thus not only sealing their passage to the semi-finals but also putting a spanner into the works of Australia’s chances of making the final 4.
Australia won the toss and opted to field first and even though they got the wicket of Kohli for a five-ball duck, they were blown away by Rohit’s 41-ball 91-run knock that proved to be the bedrock for a grand total of 205/5 – the most Australia have conceded in a T20 World Cup game.
In the chase, Travis Head was at it again vs India and kept Australia in the hunt with a 43-ball 76, but the class of Indian bowlers came through when it mattered the most. Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Head at a crucial juncture in the match, while Kuldeep Yadav (2/24) and Axar Patel (1/21) stifled the run flow. Australia eventually ended at 181/7 and ended their league stages with a solitary win.
Their chances of a semi-final now hinge on the result of the Afghanistan vs Bangladesh game. If Bangladesh win a close match against Afghanistan, Australia will go through. If Afghanistan win, they will go through knocking out Australia and if Bangladesh manage to chase down Afghanistan’s total of 115 in under 13 overs they will be the second team from Group 2 to make the semis.
