Due to heavy rainfall, several schools and colleges across India will remain closed. Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana have been receiving heavy rainfall over the past week and will likely continue to do so till August 10. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra today with the Indian Meteorological Department predicting a ‘deep depression’ in the area.
Karnataka: The IMD has informed that monsoon will be active again in the state and there will be heavy rains along with thunderstorms in coastal and hilly areas. There is a possibility of widespread rain over the southern interior. An orange alert has been announced today due to the possibility of moderate to heavy rain in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, and Shimoga. A yellow alert has been announced for Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, and Belgaum. There is a possibility of thundershowers in coastal Dakshina Kannada. Schools across these areas are expected to be closed today.
Tamil Nadu: As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, heavy rain is expected to occur today at isolated places in Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Pudukkottai. Rains in Chennai and surrounding districts are also likely to continue for the next two to three days. Chennai and its suburbs are expected to face a power cut today. Schools and colleges are expected to be closed in these areas due to bad weather conditions.
Gujarat: Due to waterlogging and a flood-like situation in Gujarat’s Valsad area following heavy rainfall in the region, schools are expected to remain closed in some places. “Due to heavy rainfall for the past days in Valsad district, Auranga river is in spate…more than 150 people have been shifted…our teams and officers are working… whatever the situation, our team is capable and will work,” Valsad DM Anasuya R Jha said.
Furthermore, due to heavy rains, school holidays have been declared in many states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan. Schools in these areas were closed till August 4. All government and private schools were directed to remain closed in Delhi until August 2 due to heavy rains and traffic diversions. Schools and colleges in Saharanpur and Meerut were closed from July 26 to August 2.
