The auspicious festival honours the 9 forms of Maa Durga and celebrates her triumph over the demon king Mahishasura, symbolising the victory of good over evil. Durgashtami, also called Maha Ashtami, is the eighth day during the nine-day Navratri festivities. On this occasion, devotees worship Goddess Mahagauri, who represents the divine feminine power and ultimate source of energy and strength. Devotees also observe a fast, offer special prayers, and perform rituals to seek Maa Durga’s blessings. On the other hand, Dussehra or Vijay Dashami will mark the end of Navratri 2024. Schools will remain closed to allow students and teachers to participate in various festivities of the day, such as performing traditional dances, burning effigies of Ravana, and offering prayers to the divine Goddess.
