Once again, Annu Kapoor has become the internet’s favourite topic of conversation. His latest commercial for sexual wellness brand Durex has left netizens in splits. In the viral advertisement, the veteran actor starts with a monologue on what seemingly appears to be a friendship. However, it takes a different turn when it eventually gets revealed that he’s promoting safe sex, catching everyone off-guard. Social media users were left surprised as they thought that it would be an ad for Rajshree Pan Masala, another commercial that went viral a few years ago.
Needless to say, the Durex ad has sparked hilarious memes and reactions from many. In an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, pop culture icon Kapoor says that he ‘appreciates’ the brand for getting him onboard as they needed to convey an important message laden with ‘seriousness’. And he’s rather happy with how the young audiences are responding to the ad that has been capturing attention for its twist in the end.
He tells us, “I’ve heard about how the internet has been reacting. Incidentally, I don’t watch news channels or read newspapers. So, I came to know of them through my office people. Audiences have taken it in a positive manner with a pinch of wit and humour. But they aren’t mocking it. This is exactly what the product wanted to achieve and they’ve achieved it.”
Talking about how he still manages to strike a chord with the youth of today, the Hamare Baraah and Dream Girl actor points out, “I don’t give lectures to them. I’m nobody to give them motivational speeches or life lessons. But I’m here to share my experiences of life in a very rational way. People may choose to not follow or believe me but I openly talk about it with all humility. Anything related to sex and violence always attracts human beings.”
For him, the Durex ad clicked as the tone of it almost feels like a grandparent is guiding his grandchildren on taking proper measures for safe sex. “This old man is telling youngsters to take precautions and be careful. Some of them may be of the age of my grandchildren. I’m giving them the right direction and lesson as a grandparent in a very entertaining way. I feel fortunate and blessed that they still love and respect me. I’m going to be 70, what else do I want at this age? I truly urge them to take protection during sex,” he remarks.
Be it Vicky Donor where he played a fertility expert running a sperm bank or this recent commercial, Kapoor emphasises on the need for non-judgment. “Sex is one of the most sacred and important physical aspects of human life. And it cannot be treated as a topic of stand-up comedy. We’re all a product of our parents’ sexual encounters. Parmatma ke diye gaye anupam vardaano mein se sex ek vardaan hai. So, we cannot be take it lightly or mockingly. Despite being laced with humour, these are subjects to be taken very seriously,” he concludes.
