Alan Shearer on Why Rasmus Hojlund Struggling to Find Goals This Season
Rasmus Hojlund found the back of the net with his only shot in the match against Newport in the FA Cup.

Alan Shearer has pointed out the challenge that Rasmus Hojlund has been facing since joining Manchester United last summer. Shearer who has the most goals ever in Premier League at 260 reckons Hojlund has not been getting proper assistance from his teammates. The Danish striker cut a frustrated figure during Manchester United’s 4-0 win over Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 28. Though the Red Devils mostly dominated the proceedings, Hojlund had to wait till the second-half stoppage time to secure his place on the scoresheet.

Interestingly, it was also his only shot in the match as well.

Shearer feels Hojlund has been giving his best to convert every chance and has led the Manchester United forward line quite well this season despite not getting much support from his teammates. Speaking on BBC, the 53-year-old said, “I thought he toiled away really well up front on his own. He led the line well. I thought he deserved his goal because of that. He’s alive, and he sticks it away really well.”

According to Shearer, Hojlund undoubtedly deserved a goal against Newport County, given the amount of effort he put in throughout the match. “As I said, I thought he deserved it because of everything that he did, his effort and everything else. He never stopped all afternoon. It’s frustrating at times, playing in that team, because I’m not quite sure when the ball is coming in. But you’ve got to keep going, and he did that and he got his goal,” the footballer-turned-pundit explained.

Former Manchester United player Paul Parker slammed Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, saying no striker would want to play alongside both wingers. According to him, Hojlund has always been up to scoring goals but hasn’t got enough supply from the other Manchester United forwards.

“I’ve seen that Roy Keane has said that Hojlund hasn’t shown enough desire to score goals, but it must also be difficult when you never get the ball. I can see where Keane is coming from because Hojlund sometimes doesn’t make the runs into the box, which is a weakness. He needs to improve on that. I’ve said it before, but he needs to be more selfish. He should demand to get the ball every time,” Parker told Tipsbladet.

Hojlund was the joint top-scorer in the group stage of the Champions League this season, scoring five goals in six appearances. However, he has struggled to match his form in English competitions. Hojlund has struck twice in 16 Premier League matches while managing just one goal in two FA Cup appearances.
